Opinion
About the Opinion Department
In many ways, Opinion is the most important section of the Daily Bruin. The purpose of the Opinion section is to provide thoughtful analysis of noteworthy news events in our community. As the newspaper’s sole section dedicated entirely to commentary, we offer a diverse and broad range of perspectives. Our goal is to engage our campus in meaningful dialogue and provide a forum for the commentary, analysis and opinions of the UCLA community.
About the Opinion Internship
Opinion columnists are selected fall and winter quarter and contribute pieces to the paper's Opinion section. Those who are accepted are guaranteed an opportunity to write columns for the Daily Bruin on the condition that they complete a series of training workshops. The workshops are an interdepartmental effort. Selected columnists must train and write for News during their first quarter before making the transition to a full-time Opinion columnist.
Deadlines and selection
An important note on the workshops
The training workshops are led by a professional journalist and will give you basic theoretical and practical training.
Please note: All interns must attend a set of mandatory workshops. No exceptions will be made. If you cannot attend a workshop or multiple workshops, your internship will be discontinued and you will have to reapply. If you need clarification, please see the media adviser, Amy Emmert. Questions about workshop attendance must be directed to Amy.
After the workshops
Once you've completed the workshops, you will start working at the Daily Bruin as an intern. In time you could become a paid staffer.
