Looking for the journalism department?

The Daily Bruin is one of the best places in the nation to prepare for a journalism career, with a long-established track record of turning out students who go on to some of the nation's most prestigious journalism internships and jobs. The Bruin even boasts several Pulitzer Prize winners among its alumni.

In recent years, The Daily Bruin has been recognized as the "Best Collegiate Daily Newspaper in the Nation" by the Society of Professional Journalists in 2004 and 2007 and has won numerous other national awards.

UCLA's journalism department dissolved in the 1970s, and the Communications Department is not affiliated with the Daily Bruin. As a result, the Daily Bruin takes journalism training very seriously, and offers a robust educational program, including basic-skills training with professional journalists, one-on-one coaching with professional mentors throughout each quarter, guest speakers and more.

There are more than 200 students involved in the production of the Daily Bruin. The paper is independent of the university and all content is created and edited by students. The Daily Bruin is composed of 12 different departments, which you can read all about using the links on the right side of this page. No prior experience is required of students who'd like to apply to participate, but accepted applicants will be required to attend mandatory training workshops.

"During my time at the Daily Bruin I have done some amazing things. I got to be present at the announcement of the Clinton Climate Initiative, and stand literally inches from the former president. I have learned more at the Bruin than I have in most of my classes, and the experiences I have had here have been the most formative during my time at UCLA..."

Sam Allen

"I found a real community at the Daily Bruin, and a place where I could work hard at something I love to do. The Sports Editor job helped me gain some footing in terms of internships and freelance opportunities. But it has also taught me a great deal about writing, managing and working with people. I think those lessons are the most valuable aspect of the Bruin experience..."
